The Lewisham Arthouse is an artist-run cooperative based in an Edwardian ex-library in Deptford. We run 45 studios, a busy gallery, classes, workshops, community activities and events.
What we offer: Our studios vary in size, some are self-contained and some are partitioned within a larger space but all benefit from good natural light.
At £5.20 per sq ft per annum, our studios are some of the most affordable in the UK, and are fully inclusive of electricity, water, building insurance and service charges. We have WiFi broadband in most of the building (included in rent), a kitchen with a small sitting and eating area, three toilets (one with step-free access) and a yard with a covered outdoor working area. Our ground floor studios are step-free.
We also have various affordable facilities on site such as a kiln, an Apple Mac and Epson printer and a large bookable space that can be used for events and classes. We run a well-attended yearly Open Studios.
What it means to join the Arthouse: Studio tenants become members of the cooperative and as such are required to contribute to a minimum of 5 hours of work a month towards the running of the Arthouse. The members are currently divided into the following teams: Education & Grants, Finance & Administration, Gallery, Health & Safety, Maintenance and PR & Marketing. We are totally self-reliant and therefore need capacity in all areas. New members are given a role in one of these groups according to their preferences, skills and experience. It is a great opportunity to get valuable experience in working for an arts organisation and to get involved in an active and friendly community of artists.
The Arthouse is looking for enthusiastic, hard-working and engaged artists who would make maximum use of their studio spaces to push their practice forward. Members are required to spend at least 25 hours a month making use of their studios. Applicants should show consistency in making their work and a strong commitment to exhibiting and self-promotion, and be willing to take part in our yearly Open Studios. Members can leave the cooperative at any time by giving 2 months' notice.
